Job Specification

The job is to acquire titles primarily within the upmarket crime, thriller and domestic suspense areas for Serpent’s Tail, an imprint of Profile Books. Acquisitions will reflect the tastes of the editor and build on Serpent’s Tail’s historic strengths and reputation as a publisher of outstanding and original fiction across genres. The role will report to the Serpent’s Tail publisher.

We are particularly keen to find an editor who can actively revitalise and lead our crime publishing, and who is not afraid to go out and find authors off their own bat, although excellent relationships with international publishers and the key agents are also very important.

The Role

  • Commissioning books for the Serpent’s Tail list focusing on crime
  • Championing and ‘publishing’ your books inside the company and to the wider world
  • Author care
  • Editing manuscripts
  • Negotiating and creating contracts
  • Maintaining relationships with key members of the trade and crime community
  • Performing, or delegating the performance, of all the processes necessary to publish good books (appraisals, AI sheets, creating cover copy and excellent metadata, garnering quotes etc)
  • Travelling and attending book fairs and crime writing events as required

To apply for this role, please email your CV and a covering letter to:

Deadline for applications: Friday 28th September 2018.
