‘You can say many things about the Booker Prize but what you cannot afford to do, not if you care about literature, is ignore it.’ Jason Cowley, The Times

Booker Prize diary

The Man Booker Prize celebrates 50 years in 2018. So how do you say happy birthday to one of the biggest literary prizes in the world? You give it its own diary, of course.

Our friends at Third Millennium publishing worked closely with the Man Group to produce a diary that would best honour their history and the fine fiction that has won the prize since 1969. (Remember when our very own Karen Joy Fowler was shortlisted for the Booker in 2014? We had the best party.).

Here’s Rachel Nobilo of Third Millennium to tell us a bit more:

‘The initial brief aimed for a diary that would include anecdotes from the past 50 years as well as wider stories surrounding the history of the prize. After working closely with the design team to create a layout that showcased the cover designs, while allowing enough space for a week-to-view spread, we decided to include these anecdotes as a foreword and include author images and quotes among the diary pages. The finished result includes introductions from CEO Luke Ellis and Baroness Helena Kennedy QC, which introduce the reader to the history of the prize, and its position within wider literary history.

The publication of the diary tied in with the announcement of the Man Booker Prize winner for 2017, and last week was gifted to all attendees of the Man Booker Prize dinner. Readers can both engage with the celebratory diary daily and be reminded of the Booker’s literary legacy throughout the year. Perhaps it will inspire you to start the new year with P. H. Newby’s Something to Answer For or J. G. Farrell’s Troubles, or to summarise a successful 2017 by escaping to nineteenth-century New Zealand with Eleanor Catton’s The Luminaries in November.’

With huge congratulations to George Saunders for his 2017 win with Lincoln in the Bardo, loved by many at Serpent’s Tail HQ, and fellow indie publisher Bloomsbury, we’re excited to  turn the page to a 2018 full of more invigorating, heartrending, spellbinding and unforgettable books.
